Disney Countdown App: Count Down to Your Disney Trip
Kids planning a Disney trip ask “how many more days?” every morning, and a countdown answers them at a glance. Vacation Countdown App isn’t a Disney app. It’s a vacation countdown app families have used since 2014, but two features make it work especially well for Disney.
You can upload your own photo, so the countdown looks like your trip, whether that’s a picture from your last visit or your child’s drawing of the castle. And you can run three countdowns at once: one for the trip and two for the Walt Disney World booking dates that matter most, when dining reservations open and when you can book Lightning Lane.

Count down to Disney – Make the countdown look like your trip
The app comes with more than 50 backgrounds, including Theme Park and Florida themes. But the best Disney countdown is the one that looks like your trip, and with a custom background you can turn Vacation Countdown into exactly that.
Upload any photo from your phone and it becomes the background behind your countdown. A few ideas families love:
- A photo from your last visit, like the kids in their ears on Main Street, so every glance brings back the memories while you wait for new ones
- Your child’s drawing of what they’re most excited to see. Snap a picture of it and make it the background.
- A picture of your hotel or a place you’re dreaming of visiting, to make the trip feel real
- A family photo in your trip shirts, if you’re the kind of family that plans matching outfits months ahead
You can rotate your photo to fit the screen, and change it whenever you like. Some families switch to a new picture at each milestone, such as 100 days, 50 days, and one week. Custom backgrounds are an in-app upgrade.
Use your three countdowns for the three dates that matter
Most people set one countdown for the trip. For Walt Disney World, two other dates matter just as much, and the app lets you run up to three countdowns at once.
1. Your trip. Set it for your arrival day, with your favorite background.
2. Your dining window. Walt Disney World dining reservations open 60 days before your visit, and popular restaurants and character meals can be gone within minutes. Set a countdown for 6:00 a.m. Eastern on that day so you’re ready.
3. Your Lightning Lane day. Lightning Lane booking opens at 7:00 a.m. Eastern, 7 days before check-in if you’re staying at a Disney resort hotel, or 3 days ahead if you’re not.
When the second and third countdowns reach zero, you know it’s time to book. Then switch those slots to something else, like the day your package balance is due or your next trip.
Walt Disney World booking timeline

| When | What opens or is due |
|---|---|
| As soon as your dates are set | Book your hotel and tickets. Disney releases each year’s packages in advance, and the best rooms go first. |
| 60 days before your visit, 6:00 a.m. ET | Dining reservations. Disney resort guests can book their entire stay (up to 10 days) at once. Everyone else books each day 60 days ahead of that day. |
| 60 days before, midnight ET | Special experiences Disney calls “Enchanting Extras,” some of which sell out quickly. |
| 30 days before check-in | Balance due on Disney vacation packages. A missed payment can cancel the reservation. |
| 7 days before check-in, 7:00 a.m. ET | Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass for Disney resort hotel guests, for the whole stay. |
| 3 days before, 7:00 a.m. ET | Lightning Lane for everyone else. |
Good news if you last visited years ago: guests with standard date-based tickets no longer need separate theme park reservations. Annual Passholders and a few other ticket types still do.
Disney changes these rules from time to time, so check the official Walt Disney World website before booking. Last checked: September 2026.
Your Disney countdown checklist, milestone by milestone
When you book
Start your countdown the day you book. In our 2026 Vacation Anticipation Report, more than half of the 580,000 countdowns we studied began at least three months before the trip, and Disney trips give you good reason to start even earlier. Set up your second and third countdowns for your dining and Lightning Lane dates right away, so you never have to calculate them later.
Around 70 days out
Make your dining wish list. Write down your top restaurants in order of priority, with a backup for each, and decide which park you’re visiting on which day. Character meals and the most popular restaurants go fastest, so put those at the top. Everyone in your group should also have a My Disney Experience account and be linked together, since that’s how Disney manages your reservations.
60 days out
Your dining countdown hits zero. Be logged in to the My Disney Experience app before 6:00 a.m. Eastern and book the hardest reservations first. If you miss one, keep checking. Other guests change their plans, and tables open up again.
30 days out
If you booked a Disney vacation package, the balance is due now. This is also a good time to start your packing list in the app. Each countdown gets its own list, so your Disney packing list stays separate from any other trip. For ideas, see our travel essentials for traveling with kids and packing accessories.
The week before
Your Lightning Lane countdown hits zero, 7 days out for resort guests or 3 days out for everyone else. Decide your must-do rides the night before as a family, so you’re not debating at 7:00 a.m. Then check the weather in Orlando and finish packing. A portable charger is worth bringing, since park apps drain phone batteries quickly. Our guide to travel tech and gadgets has a few we recommend.
The day before
Charge everything, lay out park clothes, and let the kids watch the countdown drop under 24 hours. It’s one of the best moments of the whole wait.
Making the wait fun for kids
For kids, months can feel like forever. A countdown turns an abstract “later this year” into a number that gets smaller every morning, which makes the wait easier and much more exciting.
Celebrate the milestones. Mark 100 days, 50 days, and one week with something small, like a themed movie night, a special breakfast, or a new background on the countdown.
Let them check it themselves. Put the app on a family tablet so kids can see the number change each morning without asking.
Plan a surprise reveal. If the trip is a secret, set up the countdown with a custom photo, then share the live countdown link with the kids when you’re ready to tell them.
Bring the grandparents along. Share your live countdown by WhatsApp, Facebook, or email so family members at home can count down with you.
Play while you wait. The app includes a Florida quiz, a Geography quiz, Flags of the World, and a memory game, all good for a few minutes of fun on a quiet evening.
Give them their own packing list. Older kids can build their own list in the app and check things off themselves.
Heading to Disneyland instead?
Disneyland Resort in California works differently. Lightning Lane Multi Pass can’t be bought on its own ahead of time. You add it when you buy your tickets, or buy it in the app after entering the park. Your trip countdown works exactly the same way, and you can use your other countdown slots for any dates you’re watching. For more on planning, see our guide to planning a Disneyland vacation with kids.
