There are several ways to count down to a trip, and somehow they don’t all feel the same.

84 days can sound far away.

12 weeks sounds a little better.

And 12 weekends until vacation suddenly makes the trip feel much closer.

That’s why the calculator gives you more than one number. You can see your exact live countdown along with:

Your Vacation Prep Timeline

Once your trip is on the calendar, there are a few things worth doing before departure.

The calculator works backward from your travel date and creates a preparation timeline for your trip.

Depending on how far away your vacation is, you’ll see reminders for things such as:

90 days before departure
Check passports, entry requirements and major travel arrangements.

60 days before departure
Look at activities, tours and reservations that can fill up early.

30 days before departure
Review bookings and take care of transportation, pet care or other arrangements at home.

14 days before departure
Check the details of your trip and take care of anything still outstanding.

7 days before departure
Check the weather and start packing.

1 day before departure
Check in, charge your devices, finish your bags and make sure your important documents are ready.

If you add more information about your trip, the calculator can tailor some of those reminders to the kind of vacation you’re taking.

A cruise, ski trip, road trip and international vacation don’t require exactly the same preparation.

When Should You Start Packing?

There is no universal perfect day to start packing.

A weekend city break with a carry-on is very different from a two-week international vacation, cruise or ski trip.

Your calculator takes your trip details into account and gives you a suggested date to start packing.

We’ve always thought there was something interesting about the period between booking a vacation and actually leaving.

The trip is still months away, but it has already started occupying a little corner of your mind.

You look at hotels.

You save restaurants.

You check the weather ridiculously early even though you know the forecast means nothing yet.

And every so often, you check the countdown.

That curiosity eventually led us to look at how Vacation Countdown users actually count down to their trips.

For our 2026 Vacation Anticipation Report, we analyzed anonymized, aggregated usage data to see when people start their countdowns and how countdown behavior changes as departure gets closer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are left until my vacation?

Enter your departure date into the Vacation Countdown Calculator above. It will calculate the exact time remaining and show your countdown in days, hours, minutes and seconds.

How many weeks until my vacation?

The calculator converts the time remaining into full weeks plus additional days.

For example, if your vacation is 45 days away, that is 6 weeks and 3 days.

How many sleeps until my vacation?

The sleeps countdown shows the number of nights between today and the day your vacation begins.

Sometimes that is the only countdown that really matters.

How many weekends are left before my vacation?

The calculator counts the Saturdays and Sundays that occur before your departure date.

It can be a surprisingly satisfying way to look at a long countdown.

How many workdays are left until my vacation?

The calculator shows the number of Monday-through-Friday days before departure.

This is based on a standard Monday-through-Friday week and doesn’t subtract public holidays or account for individual work schedules.

How long will my vacation be?

Add your return date and the calculator will show the length of your vacation in both days and nights.

What does the countdown progress percentage mean?

If you enter the date you booked your trip, we can calculate how much of the original wait you have already completed.

For example, imagine you booked a vacation 120 days before departure.

If 90 of those days have already passed, you’re 75% of the way through the wait.

Can I share my vacation countdown?

Yes. You can share a countdown summary or copy a link to your countdown. The Vacation Countdown App also lets you share your countdown as a screenshot or through a live countdown link that friends and family can open.

Can I make a vacation countdown picture?

Yes. After creating your countdown, use Download Countdown Card to create an image with your destination and countdown information.

Can I add my vacation to my calendar?

Yes. Select Add to Calendar after creating your countdown.

Can I count down to more than one vacation?
