580,000 Countdowns Reveal the Surprising Truth About Vacation Joy
The 2026 Vacation Anticipation Report from Vacation Countdown
Most people think of a vacation as the days they spend away. The data suggests it starts much earlier, on the day the flights are booked and the number of days left suddenly becomes something you can count.
We analyzed anonymized, aggregated data from 580,000 vacation countdowns created by about 470,000 users of the Vacation Countdown App between January 1 and August 31, 2026. The typical countdown started three to six months before departure. More than half began at least 91 days out, and fewer than one in twenty was created in the final week.
That long stretch of waiting might not be the dull part of the trip at all. It might be the happiest part.
The Numbers at a Glance
- 53% of countdowns were started at least three months before departure.
- 82% were started more than a month before the trip.
- Only 4% were created in the final week before departure.
- Users in the final week before a trip opened the app about 2.6 times as often as users whose trips were still more than three months away.
- 10.9% of users, roughly one in nine, were counting down to more than one trip at the same time.
Why the Waiting Might Be the Best Part
Researchers have been studying vacation happiness for years, and one of the more surprising findings is where the happiness actually shows up.
A 2010 study led by Jeroen Nawijn followed 1,530 Dutch adults and found that people with an upcoming vacation reported higher happiness than people without one, likely because they were looking forward to the trip. After returning home, most vacationers were no happier than people who hadn’t gone anywhere. Only a very relaxing trip gave a lasting boost, and even that faded within about eight weeks, according to a summary of the research.
Separate research by psychologists Amit Kumar, Matthew Killingsworth, and Thomas Gilovich, published in Psychological Science in 2014, found that people tend to enjoy waiting for experiences, like a trip or a concert, more than waiting for material things, like a new gadget.
It’s the same idea behind why we love counting down the days. Our data can’t tell us how any individual user feels when they open their countdown. What it does show is how people behave: they start counting early, and they keep coming back more often as the day gets closer.
Most Countdowns Start Months Before the Trip

| Time before departure | Share of countdowns |
|---|---|
| Less than 7 days | 4% |
| 7–30 days | 14% |
| 31–90 days | 29% |
| 91–180 days | 25% |
| 181–365 days | 22% |
| More than one year | 6% |
The largest single group, 29% of countdowns, started one to three months before the trip. But the long-range groups add up to more: 25% started three to six months out (around 145,000 trips), and another 22% started six months to a year ahead. About 34,800 countdowns began more than a year before the trip, which means some users are living with a high three-digit number on their screen for a very long time.
Among our users, a countdown is rarely a last-minute reminder. For most, it starts close to the moment the trip becomes real and stays with them for months.
What Kind of Countdowner Are You?

Everyone has a style. Find your trip below.

Excitement Builds as the Trip Gets Closer

Creating a countdown is one thing. Checking it is another.
| Time until vacation | Average app sessions per week |
|---|---|
| 91+ days | 2.4 |
| 31–90 days | 3.1 |
| 8–30 days | 4.5 |
| Final 7 days | 6.3 |
Users in the final week before departure opened the app almost daily, about 2.6 times as often as users who still had more than three months to wait.
That curve will feel familiar to anyone who has ever had a trip on the calendar. With 147 days to go, the vacation is a pleasant idea. By the one-month mark, it’s a plan. And in the final week, it’s weather forecasts, packing lists, confirmation emails, and that feeling that it’s finally happening.
One in Nine Users Is Counting Down to More Than One Trip
About 51,000 users, or 10.9% of everyone in the dataset, created more than one countdown during the eight months we studied.
Trips don’t always line up neatly one after another. Plenty of people are packing for a weekend away while still watching the days tick down to something bigger six months out. That’s why the app lets you run up to three countdowns at once and swipe between them. And if the research on anticipation is right, it has a real upside: every trip on the horizon brings its own stretch of looking forward.
A Countdown Timeline: What to Do and When
The engagement data lines up with the moments when trips start demanding attention.
At 90 days or more: Book the big pieces, like flights, accommodation, and anything that sells out, such as popular tours or restaurants. Our tips for booking hotels and flights can help you get better prices. If you’re traveling internationally, check your passport now. Some countries require your passport to be valid for up to six months beyond your travel dates, and renewals take time.
At 30 days: Confirm reservations, arrange pet care or house-sitting, and check entry requirements for your destination (heading to the islands? Here’s what you need to know before visiting Hawaii). If the whole family is going, our guide to traveling with kids covers what’s worth bringing.
At 7 days: Check the weather forecast and start packing. The app’s built-in packing list helps you track what’s ready, and our picks for packing accessories and luggage make it easier. Download offline maps and boarding passes, and make sure your travel tech is charged and packed.
The day before: Confirm transport to the airport or station and check in for your flight. Then enjoy the best number on your countdown: one.
How to Make the Anticipation Last
Book earlier. A trip booked six months out gives you roughly 180 days of anticipation. A trip booked two weeks out gives you fourteen.
Split one long trip into two shorter ones. Two trips mean two countdowns and two stretches of looking forward instead of one.
Make the wait tangible. Browse photos and guides for your destination, plan a meal there, or learn a few phrases in the local language. Giving your imagination something specific to hold onto makes the trip feel closer.
Share the countdown. Excitement grows when other people are in on it. You can share your countdown on Facebook, send a live link over WhatsApp, or post a screenshot so friends and family can count down with you.
Already Thinking About Next Year?
With summer behind us, countdowns are turning toward the holidays, winter getaways, and next summer. If you’re after something different, a coolcation trades summer heat for cooler destinations, and a whycation builds a trip around a personal purpose.
If our data is any guide, nearly three in ten people planning a trip for summer 2027 will start counting down before the end of this year. There’s no such thing as too early, only more days to look forward to.

About the Data
This report is based on anonymized, aggregated usage data from the Vacation Countdown app covering countdowns created between January 1 and August 31, 2026. The dataset included approximately 580,000 vacation countdowns associated with about 470,000 users.
Countdown timing was calculated from the date each countdown was created and its scheduled departure date. Engagement figures represent average weekly app sessions among users with active countdowns during each period before departure. No personally identifying information was used.
Vacation Countdown users are a self-selected group of people who choose to count down to their trips. These findings describe behavior within that user population and should not be read as estimates for all travelers. Vacation Countdown has helped travelers count down to their trips since 2014.
